11-Night Africa Safari: A Real Honeymoon Review of Tanzania and Zanzibar

After 15 years of dating, we're newlyweds who finally got married this fall.

💬 Why did you choose Africa as your honeymoon destination?

📌Africa - a new place

Ever since our college days, we’ve loved traveling together, starting with quick trips to nearby Japan, then exploring the rest of Asia, Europe, and beyond. Our trips were always short, lasting only about a week, but our honeymoon gave us a rare two weeks off. We knew we had to use this chance to go somewhere truly far, and that is how we ended up choosing Africa!

📌From Zanzibar to Serengeti

Actually, at first we simply chose Zanzibar because we loved the beautiful waters, but then we thought "Since we're coming this far, shouldn't we definitely try an African safari?" That's how we found Ahmo Travel. Our Serengeti and Zanzibar trip began from there.

💬 What was the most memorable moment or destination during your trip?

📌The moment queasiness turned into excitement

Our first game drive right after reaching the Serengeti was total chaos. The heavy rain from the night before had left the roads incredibly bumpy, and our vehicle was constantly dodging deep puddles. I was actually starting to feel pretty carsick, but the exact moment we crossed paths with a herd of gazelles in the distance, that queasiness instantly turned into a thrill.

If I had to pick the absolute best part of the trip, it was those moments looking out over the vast Serengeti plains in every direction and realizing it was just our vehicle, the person I love, the animals right in front of us, the cool breeze, and the scent of the grass. It wasn’t just a fleeting second, either. That peaceful, serene feeling stretched on for hours, which was truly magical.

💬 Were there any difficulties or challenges while preparing for your Africa trip?

📌Difficulties with local communication

In the midst of busy wedding preparations, planning our honeymoon on top of that was overwhelming. Plus, there wasn't much local information available, which made it even more difficult. We didn't have the capacity to communicate directly with locals, so we tried to find a trustworthy Korean travel agency.

We started with an affordable African safari trip, then thought "since we're here, let's try Four Seasons," considered adding Chemka Hot Springs, and eventually changed to an itinerary that ended leisurely at a nice hotel on the last day - we really agonized over the itinerary a lot. During the trip, what can I say. Our local guide Charles made our trip so much more special. He truly showed us what expertise means. I'm someone who gets a bit drained when I'm with chatty people, but Charles was gentle and quiet while also being someone who sensibly brought laughter when needed. He was perfect.

Above all, his driving skills were excellent, and his knowledge about the wildlife was truly incredible. He noticed early on that I preferred herbivores over carnivores, so whenever an animal I liked appeared, he would quietly pull over and give us plenty of time to just watch and enjoy. That thoughtfulness is something I will always remember.

Even though it rained a lot and the weather might not have been perfect, thanks to the wonderful people we met and our Zanzibar, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro tour, and thanks to Ahmo Travel, it became a truly satisfying honeymoon that we'll remember for life.
