I'm Kang Jeondo, a father traveling with two sons who each graduated from high school and middle school, and my wife, with whom I am celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. We finally made one of our long-time bucket list dreams come true - traveling to Africa.

💬 You send your kids on trips instead of to academies?

Yes, our family has taken many overseas family trips so far. Instead of sending our children to academies, we prefer meeting diverse people, experiencing new cultures, and learning from nature. We believe this provides greater teaching.

💬 What was preparing for this trip to Africa like?

We planned an 18-day, 16-night itinerary including Egypt and Tanzania, and preparing for the Tanzania portion was the biggest challenge. There wasn't much travel information available, and we had many vague worries about safety issues, accommodation conditions, vehicle transportation, and so on.

💬 Despite the preparation difficulties, why did you insist on Tanzania?

While dreaming of this African trip, the places my wife wanted to visit most were the Serengeti plains and hiking Mount Kilimanjaro. Honestly, there were so many places we wanted to see, including South Africa, Kenya, and Madagascar, but during our family meeting, we ultimately decided to prioritize Tanzania's Serengeti and Zanzibar Island. Unfortunately, we had to postpone the Kilimanjaro hike for another time. However, just the anticipation of directly encountering the wild animals and vast plains we had only ever seen in documentaries made the Serengeti an incredibly exciting destination on its own.

💬 How was Tanzania, which you had such high expectations for?

The greatest appeal of traveling to Tanzania is, above all, the experience of directly encountering nature. Every moment spent face-to-face with the vast plains—so rare to see in Korea—the land stretching 360 degrees to the horizon wherever you look, and the exotic animals living and breathing within it, was filled with pure excitement. I never knew Thomson's gazelles could be so cute and pretty. Seeing the vivid stripes of zebras, the peaceful gait of a mother cheetah and her cub, and the elegant movements of giraffes chewing on acacia thorns were moments where scenes only ever witnessed in documentaries finally became a reality.

In particular, the game drives searching for the Big Five (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, and buffalo) were the absolute highlight of the trip. Every single time we spotted an animal, we would quietly celebrate inside. It was an endless series of indescribably thrilling moments.

I hear that the number of Korean tourists visiting Tanzania has been steadily increasing recently.
