Tanzania in August and September: Weather and What to Pack

#Tanzania · Safari · Serengeti · Ngorongoro · Packing List2026.08.04

There is one question almost everyone asks first when planning a trip to Tanzania.

“What is the weather like in Tanzania in August and September?” “It is Africa, so short sleeves and shorts are enough, right?” August and September in Tanzania fall within the long dry season, with little rain and relatively cool air. It is a great window for everything from a Serengeti safari to Ngorongoro and a stay in Zanzibar — but if you pack for the ‘hot Africa’ most of us picture, the morning and evening chill will catch you off guard.

Tanzania varies a great deal by region and altitude in particular. In the safari areas it can be cold enough that you will want a lightweight down jacket, while in Zanzibar short sleeves and summer clothes are exactly right. Below we have put together the regional weather and the clothing you will actually need for a trip to Tanzania in August or September.

Are August and September Good Months to Visit Tanzania?

벌룬사파리

Yes. August and September are two of the best months for a Tanzanian safari. Both fall within the long dry season, so there are relatively few rainy days and road conditions tend to be stable, which makes game drives easier to schedule.

As the dry season continues, animals gather where there is water, which also works in your favour for wildlife viewing. In the northern Serengeti in particular you may see wildebeest herds moving toward the Mara River, depending on the timing. Do keep in mind that the migration follows the animals, so the exact location and timing shift from year to year.

August is Tanzania's headline peak season, and September carries on with much the same good weather and safari conditions. Popular lodges and camps can fill up early, so if you are planning a trip it is worth booking with plenty of lead time.

What Is the Weather Like in Tanzania in August?

아프리카 옷차림

August is dry-season Tanzania and a comparatively cool month. Daytime sun is strong and conditions are good for being outdoors, but temperatures drop quickly before sunrise and after sunset. In an open safari vehicle you take the wind directly, so it can feel far colder than the actual temperature.

In the Serengeti and Tarangire you can wear short sleeves or a light long-sleeved top during the day, but a windbreaker and a lightweight down jacket earn their place on an early-morning game drive. The Ngorongoro area sits higher and feels colder still, so warm outerwear is essential there. Zanzibar is warmer than the safari regions. Short sleeves, shorts and dresses work well by day, though a light shirt or cardigan is handy against the sea breeze in the evening.

How Does September Differ from August in Tanzania?

나이트 사파리

September stays dry, but daytime temperatures creep up a little and can feel warm. Strong sun and dry days make it good for safari and outdoor activity. Mornings and evenings in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro are still chilly, though, so summer clothes alone will not be enough. A light long-sleeved top or short sleeves is plenty for much of the day, but layer a fleece, windbreaker or lightweight down jacket for the start of an early game drive.

The practical approach is to dress so you can peel off one layer at a time as it warms up. Zanzibar stays warm and relatively dry through September, making it a good time to unwind after safari. It sits close to the equator, though, so sun protection deserves particular attention.😎

What Should You Wear on a Serengeti Safari?

워킹사파리

Layering is the whole idea behind safari clothing. Dawn is cold and midday is hot, so several thin layers beat one thick garment.

1. Morning game drive
Short sleeves or a technical base layer, a light long-sleeved shirt, a fleece or cardigan, a windbreaker or lightweight down jacket, long trousers, and trainers or comfortable closed shoes
2. Midday safari
Breathable short or light long sleeves, cotton or lightweight outdoor trousers, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen

For colour, calm natural tones like beige, khaki, brown and ivory work best. White shows dust immediately, while black and dark navy feel hotter under the sun. Dust kicks up during drives, so a thin scarf or buff to cover your neck and face is useful too.

Why Do You Need Warm Clothes at Ngorongoro?

옹고롱고

Ngorongoro sits at high elevation, so it feels colder than the Serengeti plains. If you are staying at a lodge on the crater rim or heading down into the crater early in the morning, it can be genuinely chilly. On overcast or windy days it feels colder still. For the Ngorongoro leg of a trip, then, pack the following.

Recommended clothing
A long-sleeved top, a fleece or thick knit, a windproof jacket, a lightweight down jacket, long trousers, and thin socks and a scarf if you feel the cold easily

Packing for Tanzania: The Short Version

동물 먹이주기

For a trip to Tanzania in August or September, pack summer clothes and early-autumn clothes together.

Serengeti: short sleeves, a light long-sleeved top, long trousers, a windbreaker

Ngorongoro: warm outerwear such as a fleece or lightweight down jacket is essential

Zanzibar: cool summer clothes and a thin cardigan

For everywhere: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent

The key point: layers matched to the morning-and-evening temperature swing

Even within Tanzania, what goes into your suitcase changes depending on whether you are doing safari alone or adding time in Zanzibar. Planning around the regions you will move through, where you will stay and what time your game drives start is what lets you cut the unnecessary weight without leaving behind anything you will need.
