But there is one thing to keep in mind everywhere in Peru: the climate differs by region, and the temperature swing within a single day is large. Peru's tourism board likewise describes the Andean highlands as dry and mild, with big temperature changes over the course of the day.

Lima, the capital and the starting point of most Peru trips, sits on the coast. In August and September it tends to be cool and overcast rather than hot like midsummer. The tourism board also describes the central and southern coast as mild, humid and cloudy. So rather than packing only short sleeves, bring a thin long-sleeve layer or a light jacket as well.

Cusco, the gateway to Machu Picchu, is a high-altitude city at about 3,395 meters above sea level. Days can feel warm in the sun, but the temperature drops quickly once the sun goes down. The range the tourism board lists for Cusco runs from highs of about 17°C to lows of about 2°C — a substantial gap between day and night. In Cusco, several layers you can put on and take off are far more practical than one thick coat.

What Is the Weather Like at Machu Picchu in August and September?

For many travelers, standing in front of Machu Picchu is the most anticipated moment of a Peru trip. Machu Picchu sits where the Andes meet the Peruvian Amazon, which gives it a distinctive natural environment.
